A suggestion from Steve Gillions, our footpath secretary to all walkers but especially walk leaders:

What to do when cattle, horses or other livestock are blocking the footpath

You should find another way by going round the livestock. If they are blocking a path through a field, you are well within your rights to find a safe way, away from the path, to avoid them. You should then re-join the footpath as soon as possible - and when you consider it safe to do so.

Livestock can of course be kept in fields which footpaths pass through, and on most occasions you should not encounter any difficulty. However, horses that chase people or act aggressively should be reported to the local authority.

Minutes of AGM 2017

Since the incredible launch of the Big Pathwatch, ramblers have surveyed the paths in more than 5,000 grid squares! Will you help us survey more? Taking part is as easy as going for a walk! Watch our short video to find out what’s involved and how to take part.

The Big Pathwatch is the Ramblers' most ambitious campaign ever. With your help, we aim to walk every right of way in England and Wales and provide a report on what we find - the first time this has ever been done! But more than that, we’ll use the results to find the long term solutions to protect our paths for years to come.

Follow this link to join the Big Pathwatch

Together we’ll keep our paths open for everyone to enjoy.
