East Berks Ramblers

Berkshire Area

There is plenty of advice and guidance on the Ramblers Association website on all aspects of walking.  Here is one of the pages you may find relevant and useful, together with the information below: Before you join a walk and During the walk:

What to expect from East Berks Ramblers walks

You will receive a warm welcome from the Leader and other members of the group and plenty of encouragement along the way.  A large number of our members have been walking for many years and will be happy to talk about the group and share their experiences.

As well as a Leader, you walk will have a Back Marker, both will be members of East Berkshire Ramblers who have volunteered for these roles.

The good bits:

  • Commune with nature
  • See our beautiful countryside
  • Travel unusual paths
  • Belong to a friendly bunch of Ramblers
  • Get some healthly exercise
  • Join us on coach trips for linear walks along legs of national trails
  • Join us on holiday breaks
  • Join us at the pub after long walks for some refreshments

The not so good bits:

  • You will get tired (but sleep well)
  • You may get hot, cold, wet or muddy (just wear the right gear)
  • You will need to travel the walk start (but find someone to car share with in the future)

Before you join a walk:

  • If you are not sure whether you are fit enough for the walk, please contact the Walk Leader who will be happy to advise you.
  • Wear suitable gear for the terrain and weather
  • Bring:
    • Food and drink as appropriate for walk length
    • Basic 1staid kit for yourself
    • Required medication
    • Emergency contact details
  • Arrive 10-15 mins before the walk’s scheduled start, in time for introductions and the walk briefing
  • Check before the walk for changes or cancellation via the websites or mobile app
  • Inform the Walk Leader of medical conditions that may impact your walking ability

During the walk:

  • Follow the walk leader’s advice and instructions
  • Take care over difficult terrain, stiles, level crossings, roads, etc.
  • Keep up with the group
  • Inform those ahead of you, if a large gap forms behind you and ensure the slower group can see when and where you turn off the track.
  • Inform the Back Marker if you need to stop during the walk and when you have re-joined the group
